School Programs

Grades 1–5

We currently offer two classroom programs for grades 1–2 and four programs for grades 3–5. These 45-minute classes offer students a hands-on, inquiry-based experience with Puget Sound marine topics and animals. All programs include a discussion of marine conservation and how students can be involved in helping the environment.

Hands-On-Tide Pool Wonders (Grades 1-5)

October 9, 2012 to June 14, 2013

Students will conduct hands-on inquiry investigations with live animals from the Puget Sound seashore habitat. Meet marine invertebrates (animals without backbones) and learn about their different intertidal habitats. Discover how they adapt to intertidal life and how their external features help scientists classify them into family groups. Be part of a discussion about the positive and negative ways that humans impact these animals and their habitats to gain an understanding of ocean conservation.

EALRs 1 & 2: Systems and Inquiry.

Science standards that apply: K-1 SYSA, K-1 INQA, K-1 APPD, K-1 LS1B, K-1 LS1D, K-1 LSIE, K-1 LS2A, K-1 LS2B, K-1 LS2C, K-1 LS3B, K-1 LS3C, 2-3 SYSE, 2-3 ES2A, 2-3 LS2D, 2-3 Ls3A, 2-3 LS3C, 4-5 LS1B, 4-5 LS1C, 4-5 LS1D, 4-5 LS2F.

Salmon Journey (Grades 1-5)

October 9, 2012 to February 28, 2013

Students will learn about the life cycle of Pacific salmon and their amazing journey from egg to adult to spawner. Learn what factors change salmon habitats and discuss the effect they have on salmon populations. Students will talk about human impacts on salmon ecosystems and gain a better understanding of environmental stewardship.

EALRs 1 & 2: Systems and Inquiry.

Science standards that apply: K-1 APPC, K-1 LS1B, K-1 LS1D, K-1 LSIE, K-1 LS2A, K-1 LS2B, K-1 LS2C, 2-3 SYSA, 2-3 LS1B, 2-3 LS2D, 4-5 SYSB, 4-5 LS1C, 4-5 LS2A, 4-5 LS2F.

Orca Discovery (Grades 3-5)

October 9, 2012 to February 28, 2013

Discover the connection we all have with Puget Sound orcas in this interactive program. Students will compare the physical structures and functions of orca and human bodies while building a life-size whale skeleton. Learn about the orca life cycle and how humans impact ocean ecosystems in both positive and negative ways. The instructor will lead a discussion on how students can be involved in ocean conservation.

EALRs 1 & 2: Systems and Inquiry.

Science standards that apply: 2-3 SYSA, 2-3 LS1B, 2-3 LS2D, 4-5 SYSA, 4-5 SYSB, 4-5 SYSC, 4-5 SYSD, 4-5 LS1B, 4-5 LS1C, 4-5 LS2A, 4-5 LS2F.

Puget Sound Plankton (Grades 3-5)

October 9, 2012 to June 14, 2013

Students will take a closer look at marine plankton and their adult counterparts in a hands-on learning laboratory experience. After conducting their own plankton tow, students will use microscopes to discover how plankton can be sorted into animals and plants based on their structures and behaviors. The positive and negative impacts people have on ocean ecosystems will be used as a basis for learning more about the importance of plankton and overall ocean conservation.

EALRs 1, 2 & 3: Systems, Inquiry and Application.

Science standards that apply: 4-5 LS1A, 4-5 LS1B, 4-5 LS2F.
