Seattle Aquarium works with experts to understand mysterious sea star condition

As you may have seen in a recent KING 5 News segment, some sunflower stars in British Columbia, Washington and California—and even along the Seattle waterfront—have been suffering from a condition that gives the impression of "melting." The cause of this condition is currently unknown, but as a precaution, the Seattle Aquarium has removed sunflower stars from our exhibits and placed them under quarantine until more can be learned.

Aquarium staff members, including veterinarian Lesanna Lahner, are working with local scientists as well as East Coast experts at Cornell Laboratories and Wildlife Conservation to study this problem.

We know that the sunflower sea stars are visitor favorites and we hope to return them to our exhibits as soon as possible. We’ll also share more information about emerging issue as it develops.
