Aquarium announces new director of marketing and communications

The Seattle Aquarium recently announced the appointment of Kat Willson as the new Director of Marketing and Communications. She began work in this role on September 15.
Kat brings decades of marketing and communication skills and experience, primarily during her 23 year career at Microsoft. One of her most relevant experiences at Microsoft was as program director of the smart cities program called Microsoft CityNext from 2014 to 2018. Kat was selected to influence, then lead this global, integrated marketing program to persuade public sector leaders to adopt solutions that make cities more sustainable and prosperous.
Kat is also a passionate ocean conservationist. In 2019, she left Microsoft to develop her knowledge of ocean conservation. Since then, she has completed coursework in oceanography at the University of Washington and earned certification as a Marine Naturalist with The Whale Museum in Friday Harbor. To inspire others to learn with her, she designed and built a conservation website called Into the Salish Sea ( She has also been an active volunteer with the Puget Soundkeeper Alliance, SeaLife Response + Rehab + Research (SR3), and the Washington Environmental Priorities Coalition. “I’m thrilled to be joining the Seattle Aquarium,” commented Kat. “I am grateful for this opportunity and excited beyond measure to help this team of passionate experts recover endangered species, develop wide-spread empathy for marine life, and inspire people of all ages, abilities, races and cultures become active members of the Aquarium community and active ocean stewards.”
