Animal Care Stories

Join us for a journey over a year in the making. This eight-part miniseries takes viewers behind the scenes as we welcome new animals and prepare for the Aquarium’s historic expansion. Meet the dedicated team caring for future residents of our Ocean Pavilion, and watch as our offsite Animal Care Center transforms into a set of habitats teeming with marine life.

Episode 1

Nesting

Go behind the scenes at the Aquarium’s new offsite Animal Care Canter and learn how we’re making the space ready for new animals. Opening the Animal Care Center is a key step in our journey toward the Ocean Pavilion.

Episode 2

Goatfish

The Seattle Aquarium team welcomes the first residents of our new Animal Care Center: goatfish. Team members explain why goatfish are fascinating and the role they will play when they move into Ocean Pavilion ecosystems.

Episode 3

Coral

Seattle Aquarium team members Bryan and Andy share how we grow our own coral to prevent any impact on wild populations. Join them as they carefully transport coral to our Animal Care Center in preparation for the Ocean Pavilion.

Episode 4

Mangroves

The Seattle Aquarium team welcomes live mangrove trees—yes, trees!—to the Animal Care Center. Team members share why being an aquarist requires ingenuity, the critical role mangroves play in Coral Triangle ecosystems and what mangroves will bring to the Ocean Pavilion.

Episode 5

Bluespotted rays

The Seattle Aquarium team welcomes two bluespotted rays to the Animal Care Center. Team members share why this moment is a milestone for the Aquarium, how water quality is an important part of animal care and how the rays are settling into their new home.

Episode 6

Spotted eagle rays

See how our team is welcoming and caring for three spotted eagle rays. These rays came to us from a partner accredited aquarium. When the Aquarium’s Ocean Pavilion opens, you’ll have the chance to connect with them in person.

Episode 7

Bowmouth guitarfish

The Seattle Aquarium team welcomes a critically endangered bowmouth guitarfish in need of a safe home to our offsite Animal Care Center. Team members share why these elasmobranchs are fascinating and describe the collaborative work that’s underway to prevent their extinction.

Episode 8

Future Focus

In our final episode, the team reflects on how our new facilities will support our species recovery work and our efforts to rehabilitate stranded and cold-stunned sea turtles.
