Keeping our birds healthy
With the recent increase in avian influenza (bird flu) in Washington state, the Seattle Aquarium is taking extra steps to protect the health of our animals.
While cases of bird flu are still rare in people, it spreads quickly among birds and can make them seriously sick. The risk to the birds in our care is lower than for other bird species, and no bird at the Aquarium has been affected.
To keep things that way, we’re closely monitoring the cases, adding extra steps for staff who work directly with the birds and increasing space between visitors and our bird habitats. As a result, access to those habitats may be limited during your visit.
This long outbreak has impacted many mammal species, too, and we continue to adjust what we do to help protect the mammals in our care as well.
This outbreak has had a devastating impact on poultry (chickens, ducks, geese) and birds of prey. If you are looking for advice on how to protect these birds, the U.S.D.A. offers resources.
