Build Your Soccer Dream Team in Seattle Aquarium’s Ocean Cup!

In celebration of World Ocean Day today and soccer events kicking off in Seattle this week, the Seattle Aquarium invites you to build your ultimate aquatic soccer team in the first-ever Ocean Cup!  It’s all happening this week in the Aquarium’s Instagram stories!

Starting today at 9am, we’ll post daily match-ups between two marine animals to fill a different soccer position: striker, midfielder, defender, goalie and coach. Vote on our Instagram stories, using your mobile device, for the animal you want to see in each role. After all votes are cast, we’ll share the final lineup as voted by YOU!

You can visit and scout these “players” at the Seattle Aquarium every day from 9:30am – 6pm. To make your trip to the Aquarium easier, we’ve partnered with King County Metro to offer free fare on Link light rail trains, Metro buses or other transit services*, while supplies last.

It’s a striker showdown!

In this first round of the Ocean Cup, YOU will decide the ultimate striker: the speedy harbor seal or the hard-hitting mantis shrimp. Strikers are fast, agile and fearless, unafraid of getting in front of the ball and making a play.

So, what are their qualifications to make the Ocean Cup team? Harbor seals use their hind flippers for propulsion and their front flippers for steering in the water, making them a fast and formidable foe. Mantis shrimp, on the other hand, are smashers, using their front limbs to deliver a “punch” at speeds of almost 50 miles per hour.

Should our striker be the agile harbor seal or the punch-packing mantis shrimp? The choice is yours! Check back at 9am over the next five days to vote for your favorite animals and build the greatest marine soccer team in Seattle history!
