Go behind the scenes with sharks, rays and animal care experts

Have you ever wanted to see a shark or ray feeding from a whole new perspective? Now you can, thanks to the Seattle Aquarium’s new behind-the-scenes tour experience, “Above The Reef.” As a tour participant, you’ll spend time with Aquarium staff and enjoy an unprecedented look at how they care for some of the awe-inspiring tropical animals living at the Ocean Pavilion, including sharks, rays, eels and schooling fish.

“This experience will give our guests an exciting new look at the tropical species they already know and love, like sharks, rays, eels and schooling fish, while learning what goes into their daily care,” Charmaine von Kriegenbergh, the Associate Curator of Tropical Fish & Invertebrates, explains.

In a group of up to six people, you’ll be led on a tour of The Reef—the Ocean Pavilion’s largest habitat—as the Aquarium is just waking up. You’ll take in this vibrant, multistory habitat before heading upstairs for a behind-the-scenes look at the food prep area to learn what it takes to keep the animals in this habitat happy and healthy.

Next, from a vantage point normally only available to Aquarium staff, you’ll observe the morning feeding, when the habitat comes alive in a totally unique way. Watch as tropical fish, moray eels, stingrays and other Reef residents are all fed at the same time and learn about the thoughtful logistics necessary to make it all work.

The tour is $109 for Aquarium members and $139 for the general public. The ticket includes general admission to the Aquarium on the day of your visit during regular business hours. This experience is available to guests aged 6 years old and older. Tours start at 9am every Wednesday. Learn more at SeattleAquarium.org.
